Choose the endpoint that fits the proposed system
An endpoint decision should start with the proposed PBX and the work staff need to do. A familiar handset can be valuable, but appearance alone does not establish compatibility. Use a device inventory
An IP phone connects as an endpoint on an IP telephony network. An analog phone uses an analog interface; connecting it to an IP system generally involves a suitable adapter or gateway. Cisco documents this role for analog telephone adapters. An adapter is a compatibility component, not proof that every handset or special-purpose device will work. Cisco phone configuration guidance.
Record each model, its location, who uses it and the tasks it must support. Note headsets, shared reception phones and any special-purpose analog devices separately. Ask the supplier to mark each item as confirmed reusable, requires additional equipment, replace, or not yet assessed. Do not count reuse as a saving until the assessment is complete.

Test the workflow, not a feature label
Have a receptionist and a typical user perform their normal call tasks on the proposed setup. A desk phone, mobile client and desktop client may suit different working patterns.
